About Workforce, Inc.
Work, Responsibility, and Reward Program

Workforce, Inc is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that helps ex-offenders transition back into the community through job training and important practical support, such as housing and legal assistance.  Through the process of de-manufacturing computers, then packing and shipping the resulting e-waste, participants learn to use a variety of tool pack/weigh materials, solve problems, load and unload trucks and pallets, as well as how to safely operate machinery such as forklifts and balers.

The mission of Workforce, Inc. is to strengthen central Indiana communities by helping local employers build a better workforce.   Our mission grows out of a belief that healthy communities are sustained by businesses that are successful because of the quality of their workforce.   One of Workforce, Inc.’s core values is a desire to re-connect the region’s most marginalized and disadvantaged workers with living wage opportunities in healthy companies.  We believe that inner city workers, especially young minority men,  are the most squandered resource in the industrialized world.  We believe Workforce, Inc. can make a difference for our region’s economy and for our people.

Most employers want help with their workforce needs but are often unaware of the public and private resources available to them.  Moreover, many view such efforts as irrelevant or oriented more toward workers and unemployed persons than toward the needs of business.   Workforce, Inc. wants to change that perception by helping communities do a better job of aligning new and existing  resources to grow workers and preserve economic vitality.

Workforce Inc. is committed to a sector-based approach to workforce development – a strategy that maximizes the purposeful strong attachment to the workforce we desire for our participants.  This means that the training and work experience that our participants encounter is focused on skills for sectors that can provide lasting employment at self-sufficient wages.  An example of such a connection would be to steer our participants to the growing logistics industry in central Indiana where there are work settings that would make good use of the materials handling, (de)-assembly, shipping and brokering skills that are part and parcel of the electronic waste de-manufacturing process.  Providing a strong source of energetic, company loyal and customer service focused employees can help this critical industry to contribute to Indiana’s economic development strategy.

In general, a sector based workforce development approach feeding into promising clusters will allow existing programs and funders to align efforts and attract additional resources to address sector-specific issues identified by business leadership groups attached to each sector. While some issues (such as basic skills, work ethic, computer literacy and career awareness/job counseling) cut across all sectors, many other needs can only be addressed effectively on a sector-by-sector basis.

Workforce, Inc. will achieve its charitable goals through cluster research and organizing, public advocacy, and resource brokering to support workforce services for high-risk individuals.
